These are totally awesome. They are essentially gifs, but they don’t feel as kitchy, if you know what I mean. They are designed as art moments, not as stupid funny shit that no one cares about. They are like stopped moments in time, but they are still moving. It’s nice because, since it is a loop, you’re allowed to decide how long to watch it, rather than being trapped in a timestamped video. You can realize, oh, I’ve seen the whole loop, and then decide you’ll watch it a few more times, or that you’ve already had your fill. I found them here and here if you’d like to see more examples, or read more about it. Many of them are being used as Fashion Photography in high end digital magazines or couture websites etc. A girl in my class is calling her degree project “Frozen Motion,” a nicely paradoxical title. I look forward to seeing what she will do with the loop phenomenon for her degree project! In the mean time, time to go work on mine…

Yay alliterations :P Okay anyway, I went through as usual, and picked out some of the ones that really caught my eye. You can visit Lovely Package if you want to see more.
One of my friends in the Graphic Design department, a junior, was complaining about her assignment to design a poster with Type only, and no image or arbitrary shapes. I laughed and reminded her that there is such a thing as Type as Image, or playing with space and scale. This doesn’t exactly do that, but it does prove that something can be beautiful and well designed with just typography and no imagery or unnecessary swooshy whatevers. Prospector Co. makes a series of toiletries for men which perfectly encompass the meeting of modern and traditional, and which present a clean palette without distraction. They aren’t too stark, they still have personality, they feel like something out of the 60s, but they are so clean, they remind you it’s cool to use them now! Though I have no beard to shave (thank god!!), I would buy these anyway, just to display them :)

Well, so far I’ve only checked one thing off my list, and that is that I now officially own the Pantone Universe 226 (Pink) iPhone 4S case. It’s the only thing in my college budget :P When I have a salary and a neat minimal organized perfect apartment in either NYC or San Francisco, I will also own the following items.
These gorgeous metal storage boxes are available at the Pantone online store, and also at Dick Blick and also Uncommon Goods, to name a few. To quote Dick Blick’s site, Pantone multi-use metal boxes are the perfect union of necessity and design, measuring 4″ × 12″ × 9″ (10 cm × 30 cm × 23 cm).

Also, the mugs, which are $90 for a set of a color theme, so if you want more than one genre of color you have to shell out the dough! But they are so gorgeous. They come in espresso size too! (I need an espresso machine first though) Well, I think you can get a set of 10 mugs at Uncommon Goods for $110 that aren’t all in the same family of color, but you don’t get to pick which colors. Individually, they’re like 15 bucks each.

Then there is the Pantone Pepper Mill, which I think was a limited addition, because I haven’t yet found where to buy them :(

I found these here but I’m pretty sure they were designed by Griottes, though the blog is in French. I read through their post and couldn’t identify any source, but they didn’t seem to mention having designed them either, so I’m not sure. It’s been 4 years since I was frequently speaking and reading French, so maybe it’s my bad. Anyway, they are supremely beautiful, clever, colorful, and well organized. They deserve a spot here!
