mac junkie 2.0

This post needed an update:

For those of you who are mac-junkie semi hackers semi OCD designers like I am:

Look at my beautiful desktop, then learn how to be as OCD as I am! (upgraded to 10.8 from 10.6.8 – big jump!)

If you want to modify read-only icons and customize your dock keep reading :)

You can find some icons here and some more (these are better) at this site.

To implement the Application icons go here for instructions. (Open the finder as a root and modify icons Apple says you can’t change, like ugly text edit and fontbook icons).

For things like Chrome or Firefox or Spotify that you installed (aka not read only) you can just modify those without opening the finder as a root. To modify any icon, (whether or not in finder-root mode) copy the image of the new icon, get info on the app you’re trying to change, select the icon (in the get info window) and hit command-V to paste the new one. Easy peasy.

To get Dock spacers like I have (invisible icons, technically), follow these instructions.

See my Bartender post here if you’re interested in getting rid of all the little icons in your start bar. That nifty little cloud at the top is Himmelbar which lets you access apps without opening the finder (it’s a dropdown menu), so your dock can be cleaner.

Download the Liteicon App to implement new icons for finder, folders, trashcan, system preferences etc (so that when you make a new folder, it will always be what you want it to be.) I like Alumi best.

Also, for those of you who lost where to do tap to click drag lock when you left Snow Leopard behind, you can get that back by following these instructions. (it’s in accessibility now not trackpad)

And one last thing: If you hate that new leather look that is ical and contacts, change it back to brushed chrome skin with these instructions.

Here’s an article with 25 great apps for mac to make your productivity life easier (back in Snow Leopard days, so some may or may not work on Mountain Lion but most of them should work).

Happy Hacking folks!

love

How to piss off your designer friends

This was in my newsfeed so I can’t credit the designer, but this is brilliant, excruciating, and hilarious. I can barely stand to look at it without busting out my red pen and spouting technical jargon about leading and kerning and and and and……. It’s AWFUL so it’s excellent. oohh it makes me cringe. Well now you know my kryptonite. At least it’s not set in Papyrus. My head might explode!

never forget

My heart goes out to all those who lost their lives or their families eleven years ago, on September 11, 2001. I was eleven years old, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Do not let today go unnoticed! Those people deserve to be remembered.

The “Tribute in Light” memorial is in remembrance of the events of September 11, 2001, in honor of the citizens who lost their lives in the World Trade Center attacks. The two towers of light are composed of two banks of high wattage spotlights that point straight up from a lot next to Ground Zero. The “’Tribute in Light”“ memorial was first held in March 2002. This photo was taken from Liberty State Park, New Jersey on September11, 2006, the five year anniversary of 9/11. photo by Denise Gould.

keepsakes

My dad and I were going through old stuff from his parents’ house tonight. They’re 90 and 91, and he just moved them into a nursing home, after the arduous task of sifting through a lifetime of belongings and deciding what to keep. My dad saved these metal and rubber printing plates for me, such a treasure! I’m not sure the exact dates. Some are on wood blocks, others on metal. Hyman’s Furniture Store, started by my great grandfather, was closed last year after 94 years.

And a photograph from 1940 of my grandfather, now 91 years old, born in 1921, in his uniform in World War II. That’s history right there! There were a bunch of handwritten and typewriter letters from all over with the photographs.

How to choose a bottle of wine

I’m not much of a wine drinker myself, but I could learn, I suppose, with the help of this lovely infographic by Wine Folly. Found this in my newsfeed, from my lovely friend Sarah, who works at a winery in Napa Valley. I trust her opinions! Hope this helps you figure out how to drink your wine!
