Graphic design nerd flash cards

Okay, not all of these are relevant to me, and I can think of a few substitutions that would have made more sense to the RISD graphic design community, but I still enjoy that K is for blacK (aka key color) and M is for Moleskine.

Things I would have done differently:
B is for bone folder (not bézier curve)
F is for full screen (not Fixie – I’m not a hipster)
I is for eyedropper (not interwebz – no memes for me)
T is for tools (toys what? no.)
V is for mouse (you know, keyboard shortcuts duh!)
X is for X-acto (not alc)
Z is for undo (not z-space)
and, you know me, the back of the cards would not be plaid they’d be minimal :D
(notice how most of my substitutions are adobe keyboard shortcut related)

However, part of what makes designers awesome is being unique, so though I have my own taste for what needs to be on the back of these flash cards, I would in no way make Emma Cook change her project. Nice work Emma, these are very funny. Design Nerd Flash Cards

East Coast Weather

I’ve posted this live moving Wind Map before, but it’s quite spectacular, and eerily beautiful to see the wind swirling around New England in this hurricane Sandy. Best of luck to my sister in New York and all her friends and to all my friends at RISD. Stay safe and warm!

the iPad Mini promo

Well this made me laugh out loud. (I love apple, but these parodies are so good!)

“So as usual each product is thinner than the last, it’s always gonna be thinner! Except with the 3rd generation iPad, which is now the old new iPad and not the retina display iPad. Not to be confused with the iPad mini, which does not have a retina display, but is thinner.”

“The iPad Mini is the future. It’s the future until May, at least, or probably the end of May, or maybe June.”

Laughing Squid says: “Filmmaker & humorist John Elerick takes a rather dim view of the iPad Mini in this parody of Apple’s official promo video.”

Goodness Gridness

I’ve published Shawn Hazen’s (of Hazen Creative) Book Worship blog before, but this post is about his other blog, Gridness. Gridness is an excellent archive of both new and vintage examples of the excellent use of the grid in graphic design material. Some of my favorite examples are from the Tschichold era, the Dieter Rams hey days era of Vitsœ and Braun; the systematically minimal, planned compositions that I wish it were possible to execute more in present-day collateral. As my coworker said, “this is a man after my own heart.” Shawn Hazen, I hope we get to have coffee and talk grids and typography someday! Cheers.

The best Design Blogs

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any links of my favorite sites to read. The list tends to fluctuate a bit, based on my current trending mood, but some of these are veterans. Not all of these are graphic design, but they are all interesting if you’re a designer. Also, This list doesn’t come anywhere close to covering all good design blogs, it’s just a synopsis.

Lovely Package: a well-curated package design blog
Colossal: a blog for visually stimulating creative work of all media
Oh Beautiful Beer: the best pretty-label beer blog there is
Uncrate: a blog for cool accessories (mostly for dudes) for designers
Dezeen: mainly an architecture blog, with some odds & ends
Logo Design Love: David Airey’s blog for identity design
Typo Jungle: A great resource for typographic inspiration
Minimalissimo: a blog of minimal things, whether it’s furniture or print design
Aisle One: usually has awesome vintage print design
Design Defined: anything from illustration to identity to photography
Lovely Stationery: same curators as Lovely Package, but for stationery
Swiss Miss: also an everything blog, well respected and well written
Better Living Through Design: a great resource for excellent, awesome, useless things
Book Worship: a collection of 1950-70s book cover designs
