it’s not the end of the world

Albert and I collaborated on this one, and the effect is quite excellent. Our illustrator backed out last minute, so I stepped in and took the wheel. Albert designed this poster with my illustrations.

coffee

I painted this a while ago. I bought more gouache recently because I missed tactile design.

exceptionally unexpected

Oliver Jeffers‘ work has an element of wit and quirkiness that gives his whimsical, imperfect illustrations a macabre underbelly with a sweet lemony coating. Take a look and you’ll know what I mean.

His maps project for United Airlines maps cities in five hours, taking the highlights and then adding a touch of humor, like the girl checking her hair in the reflection of the sculpture in Charlotte. All of the imperfections and layers add character and create a rich story. I spent several minutes in the depths of his site, looking at all of his Illustrations, which seem to be a hidden, unlinked gem on his site.

the scarecrow

I’m just as surprised as you are that I’m posting a video that’s technically an advertisement for Chipotle, but this one is worth watching. Our CTO sent this to the Thought Leadership team, with good reason.

Junior year at RISD we spent a whole semester on narrative, and telling a visual story. The team that designed The Scarecrow did indeed show a wonderful story. This is as moving as John Kars’ Paperman.

hipster greek statues

Some Monday links fun. Stumbled across this:

Today I learned says:

I have just discovered a whole new dimension to classical sculpture. If you dress the sculptures as hipsters it gives them an awesome new look. They become contemporary and totally badass. Needless to say, they look a lot more human. They look like people who we can picture in our lives. This beats Madame Tussauds. I am sold.
