Are there always ads in my posts?

I just looked at my blog logged out for the first time in a year today and I discovered there are ads at the bottom of my posts!?! Have those always been there or is this some new curveball WordPress is throwing at me to try to pay for the site? It is seriously annoying! They don’t show up when I’m logged in! Here I thought I had this nice, beautiful, minimal blog, and I’m actually making you look at ugly distracting ads!

Need answers guys! Is this a recent development or has it always been like this? Please comment!

Followup now that I’ve had time to do some research:

“At WordPress.com, we sometimes display advertisements on your blog to help pay the bills. This keeps free features free!

We only run them in limited places, and we do not show ads to logged-in readers, which means only a very small percentage of your page views will actually contain ads.”
according to WordPress. So if you’re logged in, you don’t have ads. If you follow me but don’t have a wordpress, sorry, you have ads. I had no idea. That’s super ugly! but I’m not spending $30 per month to get rid of them so…. :) I still love you though!

Dunno. They don’t show up in Google Reader.
